  • do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, si, do (and ut): the syllables used in the solfa system for teaching voice training; ut was used originally for the tonic, being replaced by do in some versions
  • retch: to vomit, throw up → continuing the food theme of this section, along with the obvious references to meat, fat, salt and lard → symbolizes the Viconian cycle (beginning and ending on do) and the sevenfold rainbow, which in FW characterizes the start of a new Viconian cycle → compare this with the seven streets and scholars in the adjoining paragraph, and the seven colours of the rainbow at the bottom of the main text
  • sinks down (and out): suggestive of the Viconian cycle, as our bodies cycle foodstuffs through them
