  • Roland: hero of the French medieval epic The Song of Roland (12th century). The hero, one of Charlemagne's paladins, is ambushed by the Moors at Roncesvalles andm despite a heroic fight, overwhelmed.
  • Orlando: Roland in Italian, under which name he appears in several Italian verse romances, the most famous if which being Ariosto's Orlando furioso (1532),
  • horn: Olifant, Roland's icory hunting horn. At the Battle of Roncevalles, his friend Oliver tells Roland to use it to call for aid, but he refuses. Roland finally relents, but the battle is already lost. In the end, Roland blows the horn, but the force required bursts his temple, resulting in death.
