In the Wagner opera, Tristan und Isolde, Isolde is an Irish princess being transported to King Marke’s lands in Cornwall where Isolde is to be married to the King. She falls in love with Tristan (Tristram), who was sent to bring her from Ireland.

The opera is based largely on the romance by Gottfried von Strassburg, which in turn was based on the story of Tristan and Isolde as told in French by Thomas of Britain.
