  • rose of Sharon: a name that applies to several different flowering plants (none of them roses). The name based on a reference in the Song of Solomon. The name now refers to either a flowering shrub of the St. John's wort family with yellow flowers or a kind of hibiscus with pink flowers. The Biblical flower may be a crocus, a tulip, or a lily.
