  • Andrew Martin (Irish slang): shenanigan, prank
  • Martin Cunningham: (cf 387.28: "Merkyn Cornyngwham") Character in Ulysses and "Grace" (a short story in Joyce's Dubliners). He is a Dublin castle official with an alcoholic wife and a friend of Leopold Bloom's, who on several occasions in the novel attempts to intervene on Bloom's behalf against those disparaging or antagonizing him. Cunningham was based on Matthew F. Kane, the chief clerk of the Crown Solicitor's office; Kane drowned while swimming in Dún Laoghaire on 10 July 1904, less than a month after the action in Ulysses.
