  • it came to pass: a phrase which occurs frequently in the Old and New Testaments, just as In the beginning occurs at the beginning of both Genesis and St John's Gospel → Luke 2:2: "In those days it came to pass that Caesar Augustus sent out a decree that the whole world was to be taxed". And so begins the story of Christ, ending with resurrection.
