Generally refers to "origin" or genealogy. However, the word "stemming" merely means "The actions of the verb stem" (OED). The appropriate definition of "stem" here would be "To extend back to in origin. Also to arise out of" (OED). There are some odd side definitions of "stem," however. One of the is "to debate with oneself" (OED). Another is "to beg or panhandle on the street" (US slang term). So Shem was of respectable origin, but he was also someone who argued with himself and panhandled like a bum (respectably, though).
