- Phoenicians ancient Semitic (semantic) sea-traders, whose ships left "wakes" all over the Mediterranean.
- Phoenicians: created one of the world's first alphabets which they spread through trade. In this sense all semantic alphabets from Greek on down arise from the wake of the Phoenician alphabet. Finnegans Wake is Phoenician wake.
