  • poor, decayed, blind, and gouty men: Simpson's Hospital, Dublin, was endowed in tehe will of George Simpson (1778) as a "Hospital for the Reception of such poor, decayed, blind, and gouty Men."
  • Hugh Gough: (1779 – 1869) 1st Viscount Gough, an Ireland-born British Army field marshal, for whom a statue was built in Phoenix Park. He was especially known for his campaigns in India. According to Roland McHugh, Annotatiosn to Fuinnegans Wake, Gough ended up both blind and partially deaf.
