• Hayfoot, Strawfoot: Historically, Irish dances were taught by tying hay to one foot and straw to the other, especially in isolated rural areas where uneducated people didn't know right from left; dancing teachers could then instruct them with "lift your hayfoot! Lift your strawfoot!" Hence, "harefoot" might be read as "dancing barefoot."
