Acc. to Ovid's 'Methamorphoses', Teseus (ie, Mr. Porter here) raped Philomela's and cut her tongue so that she could not tell about the crime. Philomela, then, began to wove a tapestry in which she explained what had happened, as a moth may wove its cocoon! Plus, in the Decameron, Filomela (one of the narrators) tells a story (VIII, 8) that develops in Athens, as from Athens is Ovid's Philomela.
