St. Colman started the monastery with English (Saxon) monks , after disputes between Irish and English monks arose at Inishbofin monestare, THe school was famous, and survived over a thousand years.
- Charles Mayo: (1767 – 1858) the first Rawlinsonian Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford.
