"Tune your pipes and fall ahumming"

The "tune" of blood circulating through the body's "pipes" makes "ahumming" sound inside the ear of the sleeping HCE. In John Bishop's 'Book of the Dark' he explores in detail the idea that this sound of water rushing away "in the far ear" reminds Earwicker of the River Liffey.
