  • July 15th: Named after St. Swithun, the Bishop of Winchester (ca 800-ca 862). His attributes are "holding a bridge" and "broken eggs at his feet." If it rains on St. Swithun's Day, it will rain for the next 40 days; if not, no rain for 40 days. This has been explained meteorologically.
  • Second Battle of the Marne: (15 July -6 August 1918) was the last major offensive on the German West Front (like the Battle of the Bulge, 26 years later). The battle lasted 23 days, resulting in 100 days in the Armistice of Germany.
