It has been used in supporting Milankovic's theory of orbital cycles: the Sorbas Basin in southeastern Spain shows pronounced Milankovic (20,000 year precession) cyclicity, allowing chronostratigraphic dating; these fine muds are easily eroded.
Chronostratigraphy just has the aura of something Joyce would have been interested in. That and the idea of a 20,000 year cycle.
