  • Vere Foster: (1819-1900) Anglo-Irish philanthropist who assisted with the emigration of 25,000 Irish girls to the United States in the wake of the famine. He was best known, however, for his handwriting "Copy books" that he produced and distributed to Irish schools, producing phrases in model handwriting for children to copy.
