  • W.P.: warming pan, slang for a locum, a temporary substitute, a medic or, especially, a cleric. Such posts could be acquired through means that were rendered illegal in the mid 19th century as a form of simony. This witness is likely, therefore, to be a 'bought' wintess.
    • W.P. is later fleshed out as 'Wet Pinter' (92.07) and inverts P.W. 'Pegger's Windup' (92.06). P.W. is MacDonald's abbreviation for 'Parnell Witness' in his Diary of the Parnell Commission.
